Bow Church -  The John Kelland Window

Image description

This window (West end of North Aisle) was erected in 1889, by John Kelland's younger brother, William Henry Kelland (1853 - 1911). It is the work of Frederick Drake of the Exeter firm of Beer and Driffield.

Depicted are the two saints, Bartholomew and Martin, with whom Bow Church is associated. Since at least 1742 it has usually been recorded as dedicated to St Bartholomew.

The legend beneath reads:

"In memory of John Kelland of Kelland and de Bathe Esq died at Newport  Barnstaple  April 15 1868 aged 17 Erected by his affectionate brother W. H. Kelland sometime Lord of the Manor of this Parish"

John Kelland was born in 1840 at Pennycott, Lapford. His parents were John (1824 – 1862) and Loveday (nee Saunder, 1825-1858). He died of consumption (i.e. tuberculosis).
