Miss Harriet Harvey for Poor

Harriet Harvey was born in 1847 to John and Grace Harvey, both publicans. Her father was also a shoe-maker. She lived all her life in Bow. For many years her family ran first the Tradesman's Arms and later the King's Arms.

On her death aged 69 in 1917, she bequeathed the sum of £100 to the Rector and Churchwardens for the upkeep of the graves of the Harvey family, the balance of the income to be used for church expenses. She also left to the Rector and Churchwardens £100, the interest to be used for purchasing recommends to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for the poor people of Bow.

In 1925 for example, £1 was spent on upkeep of the graves, one guinea on hospital recommends, and £41 towards the restoration of the church tower. £10 15s was spent on repairs to the gravestones in the period 1947-9.
